1. FESTIVALS: MAKAR SANKRANTI : Makar Sankranti marks the sun's transit into Makar (Capricorn) rashi with the end of the winter solstice and the start of longer days. It is the harbinger of more light and sunshine in life and lessening of the darker aspects. Light symbolizes the warmth i.e., the love and affection, the qualities of the heart. In many areas of Bharat, this is symbolized by the distribution of til-gul – the til seed and jaggery. The til brimming with fragrant and delicious oil, stands for friendship and comradeship and jaggery for the sweetness of speech and behaviour. The festivities associated with Makar Sankranti are known by various names, such as Maghi (preceded by Lohri) in Northen Bharat, Makara Sankranti (Pedda Pandaga) in Maharashtra, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal (also called Poushsôngkranti), Karnataka and Telangana, Sukarat in central Bharat, Magh Bihu in Assam and Thai Pongal in Tamilnadu. OUR WAY OF LIFE, BY BHARATIYA COMMUNITY
A report by Paul Ukpabio and Evelyn Osagie
Ota, a border town between Lagos and Ogun states, is home to various industries that produce household consumer brands. It is also blessed with an industrial estate that boasts of a residence for a small community of Bharatiyas.
The cloud was dark in Ota, Ogun State. The rain poured irregularly as if in a symphony, fast and then soft like a drizzle on the wet tarred, winding road leading to the security check point that keeps unwelcomed visitors away at the Ota Industrial Estate.
As one drives into the estate, some bungalows come within view, then the high rise buildings follow, well-architectured and in orderly fashion. As one approaches one of the flats, one is greeted by cheerful voices of men and women, some with their young children. They are members of the Bharatiya Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh resident in the estate.
The Bharatiya Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh is an organization represented in 44 countries. Its members had gathered there for a family retreat.
“Our mission is to bring global harmony, peace, connectivity, and nature appreciation in the communities that we live in,” began Dr. Ram Vaidya, the group’s world joint coordinator, who flew into town to visit.
”We belong to the Hindu philosophy where our ancestors in Bharat practise these same philosophies to the present day. It is our responsibility to bring these philosophies to the country where we are living in. So we believe that for the family to be sustainable, everybody should take care of the planet, we should always take care of each other, support the fight against terrorism and against exploitation,” he said.
According to him, its is a regular meeting for families. “The meeting is a family retreat where we come to know and understand the vision and mission and mechanism of our organisation. We call it a retreat. This retreat is for understanding our philosophy. We have four Shakha that is branches in Nigeria which meets weekly at weekends when families come together.
When we meet we practice physical fitness, yoga, play some games and sing songs together. We also discuss issues and how to move communities forward and we celebrate some festivals together. Also important is that, we pray to Almighty that He should give strength to all of us. Our motto is that we achieve by our own efforts.” For the joint co-coordinator in Nigeria, Sanjay Srivastava, observed that “Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh is a way of life”. But what does the retreat involve? Srivastava explained that: “What we do when we meet is, we start with warm up exercise, yoga, we play traditional family home games whose main purpose is to get to know one another and bring harmony between us by encouraging strength building and bonding. We also sing songs about our struggles and about our leaders in history. We discuss issues in the society and we take views from everybody on how ills in the society can be solved. So in one hour meeting time, we have six activities that mean that we do not spend much time on each part of the programme. With these practices we build bonds, friendships, relationships, we increase our knowledge and intellectuality and the most important thing we do is character building.
“This is a branch of what we have in Bharat. This is one organization in Bharat that has stood the test of time. It is presently over 90 years old. Founded in Bharat in 1925, it is Bharatiya’s oldest voluntary organization and about the oldest in the world. It is an NGO known by the United Nations and popular with other organizations. But when we came out of Bharat and spread all around the globe, we also spread the voluntary duties of the organization. We have branches now in Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, UK, Australia and so on. You know Bharatiyas are known to love nature, low cost, good management, integrity, loyalty and so on. In 1947, our ancestors came to Kenya and they decided that they will start the Shakha that is a branch there like we have in Bharat. That was achieved in 1947. So anyone coming from Bharat could meet for a retreat there. That was the beginning of the group in Africa.” Taking part in the family retreats helps us so that when we go back to our organizations, we perform better. We work proactively; we work as better leaders, giving service to the people.”
Although Srivastava was not born into the group, he recounted his involvement with the group. “I joined when I was five years old. I saw a retreat like the one we had today, taking place near my house on a football playground. That was when I developed interest in learning about the group and taking interest in the games. From there I started and I have been in Nigeria now for 12 years. Six years ago, we had volunteers and we were able to restart here.”
Another Nigerian coordinator of the group Pushkraj Moghal, who was born into the group, disclosed that he has been a member right from Bharat. “When I came to Nigeria, I became part of the organization which was founded in Kenya, I believe in plurality since childhood, I believe that everybody should be treated equally,” adding that: ”As Hindus, we build our character; behave in a proper way, which in the end automatically means that society will behave in a proper way. At the end of the day, it boils down to Dharma which means duty. That is duty to the society. Everyone is supposed to come together irrespective of your religious belief. And do it for the betterment of each other. That is the Hindu way of life. We believe the whole world is a family. One family! We believe in family. Wherever we are born, we try to be the change within change in the society through character building. We do that by interaction, games, connecting ourselves, irrespective of our different followings, we are one. I lead the Nigerian chapter,” says Pushkraj, “which means that, I lead the team that works for this noble cause.”
During the visit, it was observed that members of the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh pray. When asked if the prayers indicate that the group is a religious organisation. Moghal said: “No,” was his immediate response. “It is not about religion but about humanity and sustainable development of mankind and we have many similarities between Nigeria and Bharat. We have same kind of cultural and traditional way of life. It is that traditional way of life that encourages building of good character that our group is all about. And we also have a philanthropy aspect of it, whereby we donate books to schools and teach young people yoga; it makes them understand us better. It is beyond religion. It is basically for humanity, philosophy and culture. So any person from any religion can participate in it.”
Interestingly, according to him, the Bharatiya Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh is also opened to Nigerians and other citizens wherever the group is located. “We have a few Nigerians in our group just like in Kenya. Our activities are attractive to Nigerians but they need to understand that we are ready and open so we have to communicate that to Nigerians because we are one family. There is no hierarchy, it is a family system. Like in family we have grandparents, parents, children and everybody has their own work to do.
“I enjoy eternal freedom. It doesn’t affect my religion. The group allows you to follow your religion, you are still accepted and I can follow mine too. We ensure that whatever we do, we do not hurt the other. That is what I like best. Presently, we have about 150 families here and about 40-50 families are in Northern Nigeria: About 25 to 30 families are in Abuja and perhaps 250 all over Nigeria. And together we try to connect with Nigerian brothers and sisters. We are going to increase the number of families to ensure that society gets better and better. Just like we say, it is a way of life for us,” he said.
To the youth, Srivastava said: “The whole world is going through some transitions now and we cannot just say that the government must be responsible for everything. It is our responsibility to bring about the change in the society wherever we are living in. When we become proactive and assertive to bring about the change in the society, the first thing is to bring about the change in our lives. The youths should not be spectators but be involved.”

1. FESTIVALS: ABHISHEGAM IN INDONESIA’S PRAMBANAN TEMPLE AFTER 1,163 YEARS: The Prambanan Temple in central Java is one of the largest Hindu temples in the world dedicated to the Trimurthis – Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma. Built in the 9th century, the temple was left abandoned without any rituals and was later turned into a tourist spot following several earthquakes that destroyed parts of the structure. This temple is now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the murthis of the Trimuthi, together with their dedicated vahana (the carrier ), are still preserved in the temple. According to the inscription found in Prambanan, the temple was inaugurated on November 12, 856 AD. Now, 1,163 years after its inauguration, the same rituals were conducted for three days starting from 12th November. The rituals were followed as mentioned in 25 Shilaalekh inscriptions of Hinduism, written during the Mataram Kingdom era. The three-day prayers ended with a traditional dance performance of Siwagraha which tells the story of the Prambanan temple reconstruction. -GoTop

4. IIT KHARAGPUR RESEARCHERS FIND 3,000-YEAR-OLD IRON AGE EVIDENCE IN GUJARAT: Researchers from IIT Kharagpur have found archaeological evidence of a 3,000-year-old Iron Age settlement at Karim Shahi and a Historic to Medieval settlement at Vigakot near Thar desert. "The findings have been published online in the Elsevier journal 'Archaeological Research in Asia'. Soon after the fall of the 5200-3300-year-old Indus Valley civilization, which is mainly attributed to declining monsoon and major droughts, the Iron Age civilization came into being sometime around 3000-2500 years ago", an IIT Kharagpur statement said on 21 November. "Analysis of sediments and oxygen isotopes in fossil shells found in the areas indicated the presence of active river system and some rainfall that probably sustained human habitation from the early Iron Age to medieval times though major Harappan cities were abandoned by that time due to water deprivation", Professor Anindya Sarkar from IIT Kharagpur said. Prof Sarkar led the research, funded by Infosys Foundation and IIT Kharagpur. "It is long known that from Mature to Late Harappan period, number of human settlements continuously increased from West Indus River valley to the Ghaggar-Hakra in the East", he said. "Our findings suggest that such human migration was far more expansive than ever thought before. We believe that the gradual southward shift, forced people to migrate for greener pastures," he added. -GoTop

JAI SHREE RAM

-----

THE FIRST HINDU, REFORMER SWAMI WHO DECLARED SWARAJ
Rajendra Chaddha

Today it will surprise anyone to know that under British rule, a person had demanded Swaraj in the year 1876 before Bal Gangadhar Tilak, and he was Swami Dayanand. He was the father of freedom fighters of the Indian freedom Movement. If we study the history of the Indian independence movement, we could know that most of the leaders, patriots and revolutionaries of that period who had sacrificed their life for freedom, were influenced by personality and teachings Swami Dayanand. Among the Indian revolutionaries, Shyamji Krishna Verma, Swami Shraddhanand and Lala Lajpat Rai were his disciples and ardent devotees. Even revolutionary patriots like Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Vipinchandra Pal, Gendalal Dixit, Swami Shri Bhavani Dayal, Bhai Parmanand, Bhagat Singh, Ramprasad Bismil, Yashpal and Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi had learned patriotism from the Arya Samaj only. Not only this, even Mahatma Gandhi too was substantially influenced by Dayanand's teachings and vision. The remarkable thing is that Mahatma Gandhi's Guru Gopalakrishna Gokhale and Gokhale's Guru Justice Govind Ranade were not only the ultimate disciples of Dayanand, but also the distinguished office bearers of the Paropakarini Sabha, Ajmer founded by Dayanand. According to Indravidya Vachaspati, after the revolution of 1857, the first name in the list of great men who we can call the mental, social and cultural successors of that revolution is of Swami Dayanand Saraswati. It would not be an exaggeration to call Swami Dayanand the pioneer of neo nationalism in politics. Even Anne Besant has said that Dayanand was the first person who wrote that ‘India is for Indians’. According to Lala Lajpat Rai, "Swami Dayanand donated my soul to me. I am indebted to him for being his manasaputra. On reading the touching and heartfelt description of the plight of the country in Maharishi's 'Satyarth Prakash' and experiencing Dayanand's patriotic spirit, Patriot and ardent follower of the Sanathan dharma Madanmohan Malaviya's eyes used to get filled with tears. In light of all the above statements, it can be said that Dayanand has given inspiration and strength to the Indian freedom movement and revolutionaries through his nationalist ideology. He was the supernatural aspect of society. His emergence as a champion of the Hindu’s and Indian Nation was at a time when Indian culture was beset by foreign influences. The educated class was 2 forgetting its self-respect and its ancient dignity due to the glare of Western civilization. He dissolved this folly of Indians. Taught the Indian public a beautiful lesson of nationalism. Swami Dayanand was born on 12 February 1824 in Tankara in Morvi state of Kathiawar, Gujarat. Due to being born in the Moola constellation Sagittarius, he was named MoolShankar. Moolshankar left the normal household life in search of truth in the year 1846. Then, under Guru Virjanand, Mool Shankar studied Panini’s grammar, Patanjal-Yogasutra and Veda-Vedang. The Guru asked him to eradicate the ignorance of dissent and spread the light of Vedic religion with the light of Vaidic Dharma as Dakshina to him. The result was that he made it his goal to rejuvenate the Hindu society of Aryavarta, regardless of the opposition and condemnation of anyone. Swami Dayanand's biggest contribution is to empower and activate the Hindu people. He sent a message of regenerative power to the people who had remained weak from centuries of invasion. "Our existence is going to be erased from the land in the absence of strength", he said. No one else had done empowerment of the society in India as that of Dayanand and Vivekananda. Swami Dayanand was a strong supporter of education who wanted to spread it widely. Swami Dayanand, who favoured providing proper education to women in the country. He considered women to be revered. Swami Dayanand considered proper education to girls as necessary. Presenting the description of the Atharvaveda, he said that the girls should also follow the Brahmacharya and achieve education. He wanted the boys and girls to observe unbroken Brahmacharya in thought, in words and by Karma while performing a restrained life during their period of education. He wanted to impress the English educated youth with the dignity of Indian languages. The use of Hindi language in his book Satyarth Prakash suggests that he was the leader of public awakening and it was his program to make the ancient ideals the wall of public life. He believed that one would automatically achieve social and political prosperity by having moral ideals. Thus he was a strong supporter of temporal, moral and social emergence. According to Maharishi Dayanand, the best goal of education is high character-building. To achieve this objective, Gurukul Kangadi was established in the year 1902 on the banks of Ganga near Haridwar. The character of man is the sum of his various actions and desires, the sum of all the inclinations of his values. The way happiness and sorrow flow on his soul leave their imprint and their culture on him. The character of man is the fruit of the collection of these various impressions. We are the same as our thoughts are. Therefore, the character of the students are developed mainly in childhood and adolescence. The parents, guardians and teachers need to be 3 fully alert in this regard. Swamiji has asked to adopt the principle of simplicity in food, ethics, costumes and everywhere. He was of the opinion that there should be uniform food, clothes and accommodation for every student. This will be possible only when our standard of living is simple and pure. He has addressed the teachers and asked them to hold the above and said that the Guru has to keep in his mind that knowledge of real religion is not possible without being alienated from wealth and worldly pleasures. It is worth mentioning that the famous German philosopher and educationist Herbert has also considered the main goal of education as "ideal character building". He has written in clear words that "the aim of education is to endow human beings with moral qualities. Morality is different from religiousness. Morality is the richness of human qualities.” According to him, the essence of the sole and whole of education lies in morality. Herbert considers education as the basis for the development and refinement of qualities. His morality consists of the realization of Satya, Shiva, Sundaram and Dharma.' When he was the deputy collector in Kashi, Raja Jayakrishnadas met Swamiji (when Swamiji came to Kashi) in May 1874. In June 1874 Dayanand Swami started writing "Satyarth-Prakash" to the Pandits. Shri Harvilas Ji Sharda wrote life character of Rishi Dayanand in English, which he fulfilled in Allahabad.
Swami Dayanand, who founded the Arya Samaj on 7 April 1875 in Mumbai, gave the slogan of return to the Vedas. He formed the basis of his philosophy of karma theory, rebirth, celibacy and renunciation while writing commentary on the Vedas. He considered untouchability against the Vedas and he has a major contribution in freeing the Hindu caste from the curse of untouchability. The first edition of "Satyarth-Prakash" was printed in Kashi in the year 1875. By the time of Swamiji's lifetime till Deepavali 1883 October 30 (Samvat 1940), only 11 samullas of it were printed in the Vedic Press at Prayag. For this reason, the second edition came to light in December 1884. Among all his writings Satyartha Prakash is the principal one. Reference of a total of 377 texts can be seen in this, in which evidence of 210 books are given. Examples of 1542 Veda Mantras or Shlokas are given in this book and the total number proofs is 1886. If a research scholar of today wants to write a text with such a reference from an up-to-date library of Sanskrit of a university where all the texts are available, it would take years, which was written by Rishi Dayanand in three months. This book gave birth to a new social outlook. Inspiration to study foreign languages as much as possible is there in the Satyarth Prakash, but urges to give first place to his own language Sanskrit and Hindi. 4 Maharishi Dayananda accepted the Vedas and the Upanishads, adopting only the ancient and his interpretation of the Upanishads. He followed his own method of interpretation. He formed the Arya Samaj and his primary purpose behind it was to define and organize the entire Indian society as a cultural unit. The Arya Samaj contributed much in increasing the nationalist thought stream as seen today. It mainly affected the states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat. The Paropakarini Sabha was primarily founded in Meerut in the year 1880. Its original purpose was printing and publication of Veda and Vedangas by interpreting them. Propagation of religion, protection of orphans, and doing other public welfare activities have been taken as activities of Aryasamaj, along with publication of books, doing of vedic research and studies. Maharishi Dayanand started the purification movement by inspiring people who had converted to other religions to convert back to Hinduism again. Under this movement, by purifying millions of Muslims and Christians, they had made a comeback to the true Sanatan Vedic religion. It was started by Swami Shradanand on 11 February 1923 by establishing the Bharatiya Shuddhi Sabha. (Rajendra Chaddha is Member Central Team, Pragya Pravah.)

1. FESTIVALS: DATTA JAYANTI : Datta Jayanti, also known as Dattatreya Jayanti, commemorates the birth of Bhagwan Dattatreya, a combined form of the divine trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. It is celebrated on Margshirsha Poornima ( December 11 this year ) throughout the country, and in particular in Maharashtra. Dattatreya was the son of the sage Atri and his wife Anusuya. Though Dattatreya is considered a form of all the three deities, he is especially considered an avatar of Vishnu, while his siblings Chandra and the sage Durvasa are regarded forms of Brahma and Shiva respectively.
On Datta Jayanti, people take bath early in the morning in the holy rivers or streams, and observe fast. A puja of Dattatreya is performed with flowers, incense, lamps, and camphor. They remember Dattatreya's work and read the sacred books Avadhuta Gita and Jivanmukta Gita, which contain various discourses on Dattatreya.
The temples dedicated to Dattatreya are located throughout Bharat, the most important places of his worship are Ganagapur in Karnataka near Gulbarga, Narasimha Wadi in the Kolhapur district, Pithapuram in Andhra Pradesh near Kakinada, Audumbar in Sangli district and Girnar in Saurashtra. GoTop

2. AYODHYA VERDICT: ENTIRE DISPUTED SITE GOES TO HINDUS : The Supreme Court pronounced in a historic judgment on November 9th that a temple be constructed for Hindus on a 2.77-acre site in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya town while Muslims should get an alternative land to build a potential mosque.
The five-judge Constitution bench, headed by Chief Justice of Bharat Ranjan Gogoi, ruled unanimously that the spot should be handed over to a trust that the Centre must constitute in three months to oversee the construction of a temple, subject to conditions.
In the judgment running into 1,045 pages, the apex court said a report by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) provided evidence of the remains of a building, ‘that was not Islamic’, beneath the demolished mosque. The bench noted that the faith of Hindus that Ram was born at the site of the now-razed masjid is undisputed, and the existence of structures like Sita Rasoi, Ram Chabutra and Bhandar Grih are testimony to the religious fact of the place.
"On the balance of probabilities, there is clear evidence to indicate that the worship by the Hindus in the outer courtyard continued unimpeded in spite of the setting up of a grill-brick wall in 1857.
The top court rejected the claim on the land by the Nirmohi Akhara, saying it is not a shebait or devotee of the deity of Bhagwan Ram. According to the judgment, five acres of land will also be allotted in Ayodhya to the Muslim community.
Pradhan Mantri Narendra Modi hailed the judgment and said it had settled a long-standing dispute. It was also hailed and greeted by Hindu community all over the world. GoTop

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh also joins the people of the whole nation in welcoming this verdict. The final judgment has come after legal processes spanning decades. In this process, all aspects relating to the Ram Janmabhoomi were thoroughly checked. Arguments placed by all parties reflecting their respective viewpoints were evaluated. We express our gratitude and congratulate the Honourable judges and lawyers of all sides who had carried on with this long churning patiently to bring out truth and justice. In this long-drawn effort, we remember all those supporters who had rendered their services in diverse ways and all martyrs with deep sense of gratitude.
We welcome and congratulate the people for accepting the judgment, and people in different levels of administration and society for maintaining order keeping alive brotherhood. The people of Bharat are also worthy of praise for waiting for the verdict peacefully for long with utmost patience.

Forces which create discord among people and incite violence should not be patronized and kept away. One should express happiness with restraint, moderation and politeness completely avoiding any provocative or instigating action or deed and staying within the limits of the Constitution and law.

JAI SHREE RAM

MOMENTOUS JUDGEMENT ON AYODHYA
Ravi Shankar Prasad

SC’s adjudication of Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid dispute represents a new dawn for India

Lord Ram is also known as Maryada Purushottam. Dignity and ethics are central to his conduct and philosophy. His story for the last thousands of years continues to animate and inspire the psyche of ordinary Indians and remains a proud narrative of our civilisational, cultural and spiritual heritage.
It was only fitting and appropriate that the long pending dispute for last hundreds of years about his place of birth “Ram Janmabhoomi” at Ayodhya, was finally settled by the Supreme Court after an elaborate hearing of more than 40 days by a unanimous verdict of five judges. An issue which was contentious, full of competing claims and interests many times giving rise to conflicts and hostility, could be resolved in a perfectly lawful manner consistent with the Maryada of our constitutional polity.
It is equally reassuring that the entire country has accepted this judgment. There is no discord or hostility on the ground and a rare amity, brotherhood and understanding has been witnessed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a leader deserves full praise for his appeal which played a cardinal role in this amity as also the requisite administrative arrangement. It is indeed a new dawn for India.
There were basically four suits. One filed by a worshipper Gopal Singh Visharad, second by Nirmohi Akhara, third by UP Sunni Central Waqf Board and fourth by the deity itself “Ram Lalla Virajman”, who claimed a declaration of title to the disputed site coupled with injunctive relief. The Allahabad high court gave relief to the Hindus with the right to pray in the main area and also allotting it to them. It further proceeded to partition the disputed area one-third each to Hindus, Nirmohi Akhara and Muslims.
The judgment of the Allahabad HC was challenged in the Supreme Court, which led to the decision of the Supreme Court. There was voluminous evidence on record – both oral and documentary – consisting of thousands of pages. The Supreme Court in the judgment elaborately considered the interplay of all these evidences. It would only be appropriate to recall some of these.
Joseph Tieffenthaler was a Jesuit missionary who visited India in 1740. He notes the sacred character of Ayodhya, which he called Adjudea. In particular, he mentions a “Bedi” – a cradle – where Beschan (Vishnu) was born in the form of Ram. Alexander Cunningham, director general of Archaeological Survey of India, refers to Ayodhya in his 1862 report as the birthplace of Lord Ram. P Carnegie, commissioner and settlement officer of Faizabad, mentions in his 1870 report that “Ajudhia is to Hindus what Mecca is to Mohammedans”. The court concluded vide para 786 that travelogues of foreigners provide a detailed account both of the faith and belief of Hindus based on the sanctity which they ascribe to the birthplace of Lord Ram and to the actual worship by Hindus of the Janm Sthan. Very significantly, the court further noted that for a period of 325 years from the date of the construction of the mosque until installation of a grill wall by the British, no evidence has been adduced by the Muslims to establish the exercise of possessory control over the disputed site.
The court held that the oral and documentary evidence shows that the devotees of Lord Ram hold a genuine longstanding and profound belief in the religious merit attained by offering prayer to Lord Ram at the site they believe to be his birthplace. Significantly the court mentioned the acknowledgments by Muslim witnesses about the presence of Hindu religious symbols like Varah, Jai-Vijay and Garud outside the three-dome structure. The court further held, “They are suggestive not merely of the existence of faith and belief but of actual worship down the centuries.” Quite clearly, what was brought down was not just brick and mortar but a vibrant and active symbol and place of worship for millions of Hindus through centuries.
While decreeing the suit in favour of Ram Lalla plaintiff of the Hindus in substance, the court also decided to provide restitution to the Muslim community by directing the government to allocate five acres of land to the Sunni Waqf Board. The central government has been directed to formulate a scheme envisaging the setting up of a trust for the management as also construction of a temple. It has also been given the liberty to hand over the rest of the acquired land for development in terms of the scheme. The order of the Allahabad HC was set aside and the suit of Nirmohi Akhara was dismissed.
Significantly the court observed the practice of religion, Islam being no exception, varies according to the cultural and social context. Cultural assimilation is a significant factor which shaped the manner in which religion is practised, because cultural assimilation cannot be construed as a feature destructive of religious doctrine. Surely the heritage of Kabir, Rahim and Raskhan stands vindicated today. For me it was an honour and privilege to argue this case on behalf of Ram Lalla and Hindus in the Allahabad HC.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on 21st October announced the glacier is now “open” to tourists and they can trek from the base camp to Kumar post. “From Siachen base camp to Kumar post, the entire area has been opened for tourism purposes,” he tweeted.
The Army earlier used to organize such treks for civilians annually but it was suspended two years back due to logistical and operational issues. The temperatures there vary from minus 10 to minus 40 degrees Celsius and the troops have been guarding posts at heights ranging from 16,000 feet to 24,000 feet since 1984.
The base camp is at a height of 12,000 feet while the Kumar post is at an altitude of 16,000 feet. Given the nature of the terrain, the trekkers were put through a three-phase acclimatization due to harsh winter and lack of oxygen.
The nearest airport to Siachen is located at Thoise and troops board and deboard there to serve a stint at the glacier or returning after finishing the term which lasts about three to four months. GoTop

14. NEW AIRPORT CONNECTS CHENNAI AND JAFFNA AFTER 40 YEARS : It takes less than 30 minutes to undertake a journey from Chennai to Jaffna by air. But it took an Air India flight more than 40 years to cover that distance. On 17th October, a small Alliance Air ATR flight — a subsidiary of Air India in Chennai made its maiden landing at the newly upgraded Jaffna International Airport at Palaly, 20 km north of Jaffna city of Sri Lanka, opening with it a new chapter in the 2,000-year-old relationship between the two nations. Equipped with a 2.3-km runway, Sri Lanka’s third international airport was declared open by President Maithripala Sirisena after the landing of the first flight from Bharat.
In the 1960s and 1970s, Jaffna, the Tamil heartland in Sri Lanka, had well-connected aerial routes with Bharat, with both Air India and Ceylon Airways operating between the two countries. It was discontinued in the late 1970s when the 30-year Eelam war for a separate homeland for Tamils forced the Sri Lankan government to shut all international operations at the airport.
The people of Jaffna, who have both cultural and familial relationships with Bharat, had been demanding that the airport be reopened for public transport since the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Ealam (LTTE) in 2009. The distance between Jaffna and Colombo is 370 km and a journey of six to eight hours by road or train. GoTop

JAI SHREE RAM

BHASKAR RAO : A MAHATMA OF OUR TIMES
Tarun Vijay

It's difficult to imagine that such a simple, yet stronger than the steel man was amidst us just a few years before. He was a source of strength for thousands of RSS workers who were facing the brutal attacks from the CPM goons, he was a brother to innumerable families who sought his advice and help for matters that included education, medical treatment, marriage, mutual discords and even buying a new house !! He never taught Sangha through books, never discussed shakha when visiting a family, but remained a dear sahēādaran, chettan, jeshtan, aniyan,anujan……..to all those who were ready to live and sacrifice their lives for Bharath Mata.
He was a living embodiment of Dr Hedgewar’s ideals and represented the old school of pracharaks carrying forward the legacy of Dattopant, Seshadri ji, Yadavrao Joshi ji and Suryanarayan Rao.
Such threads of warmth and a Hindu family affinity he had woven that each one of us thought- I am very close to him. And he was close to every one of us- equally. We would often say- if some one hadn’t seen Deendayalji, he could well imagine how he might have been after seeing Bhaskar Rao ji.
He was born in Yangon on 5th October 1919, where his father Dr Shiv Ram Kalambi was a popular medical practitioner and a RSS Swayamsewak. His mother Smt Radha Devi was instrumental in giving Bhaskar the intrinsic values of a Hindu family. Unfortunately his both parents died too early forcing Bhaskar to return to Mumbai with his uncle and pursue studies. He did graduation from St Xaviers College and took LLB degree from Bombay university.
But the destiny had a different field reserved for him. He felt the plight of the Hindus who were struggling for the independence from the British yoke on one side and the attacks of the Islamists and Christian evangelists on the other. He decided to be a pracharak in the RSS and was sent to Kerala in 1946.
It was the most difficult time for the Hindu consolidation in Kerala those days. Muslim intransigence and offensive against the Hindus was on a rise, Christians were forcibly trying to take over many Hindu shrines and their zeal to convert Hindus was unstoppable, Hindu society was deeply divided in caste and community segments, the influence of Sri Narayan Guru, Mahatma Ayyankali, saved Hindus to a great extent, still the flood of assaults on the Hindus was continuing . RSS had hardly twenty shakhas in the entire Kerala region as it was known then as Travancore-Cochin or Thiru-Kochi (1949–1956), originally called United State of Travancore and Cochin. The Malabar area was a Muslim hub of Jihadist activities, which was the first Muslim majority district carved out by the Communist government led by EMS Namboodiripad ( Elamkulam Manakkal Sankaran Namboodiripad).
The Hindus in Kerala needed a strong helping hand to regain confidence that was shattered by the barbaric Moplah violence about which Dr B.R Ambedkar had written, " The Hindus must have the courage and the faith to feel that they can protect their religion in spite of such fanatical eruptions. A verbal disapproval by the Mussalmans of Mopla madness is no test of Mussalman friendship. The Mussalmans must naturally feel the shame and humiliation of the Mopla conduct about forcible conversions and looting, and they must work away so silently and effectively that such a thing might become impossible even on the part of the most fanatical among them.
My belief is that the Hindus as a body have received the Mopla madness with equanimity and that the cultured Mussalmans are sincerely sorry of the Mopla's perversion of the teachings of the prophet “
—-B. R. Ambedkar, Ambedkar, Bhimrao. Pakistan or the Partition of India. Chapter 7).
The Kerala that was nourished with the noble teachings of Sri Narayan Guru and Mahatma Ayyankali, had received a brotherly hand of strength and wisdom by stalwarts like Dattopant Thengadi, Madhavan ji, Sukumaran ji, Ranga Hari ji, P Parameswaran ji , Sethu Madhavan ji and many more. K. Bhasakar Rao, or K Bhaskaran or simply Bhaskarattan, had a huge challenge before him to prove worthy of this Sangha legacy , tackle the situation and hold the flood of assaults on Hindus as well as keep the morale of the society high. His focus on the low income groups, making new Sangha swayamsewaks among fishermen, poor artisans, farmers, rickshaw drivers, teachers and students was a big success. RSS grew leaps and bounds in rural areas and among the poorest of the poor sections.
It drew the brutal ire of the communist leadership that saw they’re losing ground in a big way . The long list of the martyrs of the Sangh is a testimony to the bewildered CPM leadership that found refuge in killing the young RSS workers. It goes to the credit of Bhaskar Rao that he remained an unwavering source of solace and strength to the bereaved Sangha families as well as creating a new generation of Swayamsewaks who won’t be fearful of CPM violence.
When I look at his early years it surprises how a young lad in his twenties would decide to give his life for the society, in-spite of having a LLB degree in his pocket in those days when being a solicitor meant a high profile rich life.
Yes, he was in that dreamy eyed age when he left home in Mumbai and joined the ranks of the sangha workers in south- learnt Malayalam and became one with the new environment he was asked to adopt. Consolidating the Hindu society, encouraging dharma and powering cultural threads among the new generation was his main task and soon he became a highly respected household name among the RSS cadre. His simplicity, unassuming nature, an extraordinary ability to bring out the best from the most ordinary and often ‘rejected and dejected’ youth- was his forte.
He worked to eliminate the caste barriers and took strong stand to help and support intercaste marriages. The one quality that endeared him to thousands was his transparent behavior that made innumerable swayamsewaks like us to feel he belongs to our family and we can discuss any personal problem with him. He listened carefully, and he advised in most trying situations, often bringing peace and resolving domestic conflicts too.
Bhaskar Rao is the creator of the Veer- Kerala that will not yield before the violence of the anti Hindu forces, keep the fire of Dharma intact with Ahuti of their lives, defeat the foreign funded agencies of the Islamists, proselytizer zealots, insanely brutal Communists democratically and keep on working to build the edifice of a humane, tolerant and a civilized Hindu society , dedicated to Bharat Mata.
The second avatar
His life’s second avatar was to join India;’s largest tribals service organization Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram in 1984.
The Kalyan ashram saw best of the service projects, new hostels, medical centres, schools, and late evening literacy classes for tribal farmers under his guidance. I was a full time worker of the Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram during his tenure and had the privilege to seek his guidance and received his affection as a worker.
When he saw my mother was having a difficult time in Dehradun, as she was alone and had severe eye problem that made her helpless, while I was in Dadra Nagar Haveli, he, sent a few tribal students from Assam to be with my mother and also study in local school.
The idea later grew into a bigger separate Vanavasi school and hostel thats was inaugurated by Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee .
He helped and encouraged all, and each swayamsewak never ever felt as if his help is like a ‘burden’.
He was kind, soft spoken, suave and too humble.
It certainly was a new challenge for him when he was asked to work among tribal people, as organizing secretary of the Vanavasi Kalyan Ashram which is running thousands of schools,
colleges, hostels, all over India- in specifically tribal pockets. It was a new world for him— as tribals form a very distinct fabric of the Indian milieu , brilliant and yet clouded by various inhospitable factors that make them vulnerable to exploitation by the rich urban traders, miners, bureaucrats and of course foreign funded conspiracies of proselytization.
It is often ignored that though the tribals form just eight percent of Indian population, more than ninety eight percent incidents of insurgency, terrorism and foreign controlled activities like conversion through agencies inimical to India’s growth occur in the tribal region alone.
Very soon Bhaskar Rao grasped the situation and he focussed on giving quality education to the tribal students so that they become aware of their environment, are able to understand the threats and reduce their vulnerability to fall prey to exploitative forces.
You can’t awaken a person who wont understand what exploitation means and neither can you teach religious texts to a hungry boy.
Give them good education, nourish their body and the soul and you will see that you have turned him into a brilliant, awakened patriotic
Indian, he would say. Good education is the key to not only prosperity and health but also to produce patriotic Indians who can contribute enormously to the growth of motherland.
He said that the education must be such that it must inculcate values of love for motherland, dharma and culture- and they must understand that a conversion to an alien faith not only makes them alien to the very heritage of their ancestors but also cuts all threads that form their cultural and civilizational fabric. First make tribal youth understand what are the values that define his being, his existence, his tribal social world- then he would stand tall and protect his dharma and culture.
Great ideas were so beautifully explained by him that there was hardly any need for further elaborate or get into a reactionary, offensive mode.
He was everything to us. He was a mahatma to Bharatvarsh that we see in the personalities of Mahatma Gandhi and Pt Deendayal Upadhyaya.
