5. FOR ANY MAJOR TRANSFORMATION, SPIRITUAL REJUVENATION IS ESSENTIAL – DR. MOHAN BHAGWAT: The valedictory function (Samapan Samaroh) of the Karyakarta Vikas Varg Dwitiya was held in Nagpur on June 10. The chief guest on the occasion was Mahant Ramgiri Ji Maharaj of Godavri Dhaam.
Mahant Ramgiri Ji Maharaj lauded the RSS and said that in Sangh, one gets the Sanskaras to remain balanced in all conditions, whether favourable or adverse. He further said that due to association with RSS one gets to learn about dedication and maintaining social harmony.

Speaking at the occasion that fell on the Balidan Diwas of the fifth Guru Arjun Dev ji Maharaj, RSS Sarasanghachalak Dr. Mohan Bhagwat remembered the supreme sacrifice of Guru Arjun Dev ji Maharaj for the cause of the nation.  He added that we are witnessing the culmination of the training of a group dedicating themselves to the national cause.
He also said that the role of Sangh is to raise awareness and engage in lokmat parishkar during every election and Sangh does not involve itself in the specifics of the outcome.
Dr. Bhagwat highlighted issues like climate change and the water crisis which are impacting public lives and said that only Bharat, culturally bound to protect nature, can lead the world in this area.
These cultural values need to be reaffirmed in all spheres of Bharatiya life and there is a need for a change in perception.
Dr. Bhagwat also reaffirmed that acceptance is essential and it is necessary for the country’s unity that the idea of jati and birth-based differences is eliminated. He emphasised the importance of fostering social harmony by ensuring equal access to community resources such as mandirs, water sources, and crematoriums for all individuals, regardless of their backgrounds. He also advocated for a more sustainable lifestyle by promoting the abandonment of plastic, conservation of water, and the greening of households through the “Harit Ghar” initiative.
He stressed the significance of self-reliance (‘Swa’) in economic matters, encouraging people to become economically independent and resilient at the grassroots level.
He also highlighted the importance of nurturing cultural values within families to ensure their transmission to future generations. He underscored the need for families to spend quality time together at least once a week, discussing their ancestors and spreading positivity.
Dr. Bhagwat said that though the role of the government is important, we need not look up to the government to bring about all social transformation. For any major transformation, spiritual rejuvenation is essential. When the society awakens with this spirit, it also leads to changes in the social systems.
He concluded by emphasising the need for selfless service in the present times, both for the country and society. Building a strong foundation is crucial for shaping a society that can withstand challenges and continue to grow.
The Karyakarta Vikas Varg Dwitiya which started on May 16 was attended by 936 shiksharthis from 46 prants. They were in the age group of 20-40 years and represented a wide cross-section of the society including doctors, farmers, teachers, and shramjeevis.  Apart from the shareerik and bauddhik sessions, the activities in the varg from 4:00 am to 10:30 pm included shram sadhanaa and sewa activities.

JAI SHRI RAM
---
KNOW ALL ABOUT RSS’ SANGH SHIKSHA VARG: A HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) initiated its first training camp, known as Sangh Shiksha Varg, in Nagpur in 1927. These early camps, referred to as summer camps, lasted for three weeks. Over the years, they evolved and were renamed ‘Adhikari Shiksha Varg’. By 1950, they came to be known as ‘Sangh Shiksha Varg’.
In the initial years, meals were provided by local households, and trainees were accommodated in local schools like Lokanchi Shala, Dhanwate Nagar School (then known as Mill City School), and New English School. These facilities were offered free of charge. However, expenses for medical services, electricity, and water during the camps were covered by fees collected from the participants.
Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, the founder of RSS, received significant support from Anna Sohni and

Martandrao Jog to ensure the success of these camps. In the early years, after the physical training sessions, Dr. Hedgewar would take all the volunteers to a pond in Chitnispura for swimming. As the number of participants grew, these visits to the pond were discontinued.Around 1939, the camps began to be held at the Hedgewar Smriti Mandir in Reshimbagh, Nagpur. This land, approximately one acre, was purchased by Dr. Hedgewar for ₹700. Since then, the RSS training camps have continued to be held at this location.
Program Structure
The camps run from 5 AM to 9 PM, encompassing both physical and intellectual training. Initially, two and a half hours in the morning and one and a half hours in the evening were dedicated to physical exercises. The afternoons, from 12:30 PM to 5 PM, were reserved for rest, discussions, and note-taking by the volunteers.
Expansion Beyond Nagpur
Following the success of these camps in Nagpur, the first training camp outside Nagpur was held in Pune in 1934. By the following year, Pune hosted both first and second-year training camps. The Pune camp was scheduled from April 22 to June 2, while the Nagpur camp ran from May 1 to June 10, accommodating the summer vacation period. Dr. Hedgewar would spend time in Pune until May 15 and then move to Nagpur.
Subsequently, camps were also organized in Nashik. By 1942-43, the number of volunteers attending these camps had reached nearly 2,750. In 1938, the first camp outside Maharashtra was held in Lahore. As the organization expanded, first and second-year training camps were organized in other states. However, attendance at the Nagpur camp remained mandatory for third-year training.
Nationwide Expansion of RSS Training Camps
Nagpur, India [1940]: The RSS training camps, known as Sangh Shiksha Varg, witnessed a significant nationwide expansion in 1940. Volunteers from across India, from the northern to southern regions and eastern to western provinces, attended the training camp held in Nagpur that year. Unfortunately, shortly after the camp concluded, the RSS founder, Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, passed away on June 21, 1940.
Why May-June?
The training camps are held during May and June to coincide with the summer vacations of schools and
colleges. With examinations completed, students are free during these months. This timing was chosen to
introduce young people to the working methods of the RSS, a practice that continues to this day.
Interruptions in the Continuous Flow
Over the years, several interruptions have impacted the continuous flow of these training camps. The RSS faced bans during 1948-1949, 1976-1977 during the Emergency, and again in 1993. In 1991, the camps were disrupted due to special national circumstances, including the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and the Lok Sabha elections. More recently, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the suspension of these training camps in 2020-2021.
RSS Training Camps Undergo Structural Changes in 2024
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has announced significant changes to the structure of its training camps starting this year. The new format includes several types of camps with varying durations:
Initial Camp: 3 days
Primary Education Camp: 7 days
Sangh Shiksha Varg (Basic Training Camp): 15 days
Worker Development Camp-1 (formerly known as Second Year Training Camp): 20 days
Worker Development Camp-2 (previously referred to as Third Year Training Camp): 25 days
Previously, the Nagpur camp, now known as Worker Development Camp-2, lasted 40 days. In the years preceding India’s independence, the duration was temporarily reduced to 30 days. The RSS offers two types of Sangh Shiksha Varg: one for volunteers aged 18 to 40, and another special camp for those aged 41 to 65.
Participants over 65 years old are not admitted.
Activities and Closing Ceremonies
During the 25-day Sangh Shiksha Varg, participants engage in a route march (path sanchalan) in full RSS uniform. The closing ceremony of the camp is a significant event organized by the city of Nagpur. The Sarsanghchalak (chief) of the RSS delivers an address, providing an in-depth perspective on current national and international issues from the RSS’s viewpoint. The speech also outlines the organization’s stance on social issues directly impacting India and its citizens, offering valuable insights to the volunteers.
Distinguished Guests
The closing ceremonies often feature a prominent guest speaker. Over the past decade, several notable individuals have been invited to address the participants. These guests have contributed to the comprehensive educational experience offered at the camps, reinforcing the RSS’s commitment to developing informed and dedicated volunteers.
RSS Training Camps Lay Focus On Social Harmony and Discipline
The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) organised its Third Year Training Camps twice in 2022, once in May and again in December. These camps, pivotal in the training of RSS volunteers, offer a unique blend of activities and experiences aimed at fostering social harmony, discipline, and a sense of national unity. Key Features of the Camps -
Social Harmony: The camps bring together trainees from across India, transcending caste and color barriers, promoting a sense of unity and equality.
Community Meals: Volunteers dine together, reinforcing the principle of equality and breaking down social barriers.
Collective Living: Participants live and engage in all activities together, fostering a spirit of camaraderie.
National Perspective: Trainees gain a broad understanding of national issues, enhancing their awareness of India’s diverse cultural and geographical landscape.
Discipline: The structured environment instills a strong sense of discipline among the volunteers.
Knowledge Sharing: Participants receive comprehensive knowledge about the organizational structure and geographical reach of the RSS.
Problem-Solving: The camps address various challenges faced by society and the nation, equipping volunteers with problem-solving skills.
Skill Development: The training enhances the efficiency and skillset of the volunteers.
Sense of Organization: A feeling of belonging and oneness is cultivated among all participants.
Self-Reliance: Volunteers perform all tasks themselves, promoting self-sufficiency and independence.
Speeches by the Sarsanghchalak
RSS Sarsanghchalak Mohan Bhagwat, in his address at the Third Year Camp in Nagpur on June 6, 2022, emphasized the purpose of the training. “Why do we conduct this training? It is to ensure that Bharat Mata’s glory is recognized worldwide. Are we aiming to become conquerors? No, our goal is not to conquer but to unite. The work of the RSS is also aimed at uniting people, not conquering them. Historically, Bharatvarsha has aimed to unite the world, not to dominate it.”
In another significant speech during the Lok Satta-Idea Exchange on October 22, 2012, Bhagwat remarked on the primary training camps: “Our primary education camps select volunteers who have been with the RSS for two to three years. Every year, thousands of volunteers, with an average age of 30—90% of whom are between 20 and 25—participate in these camps.”
These training camps are integral to the RSS’s mission of creating a disciplined, self-reliant, and united volunteer force dedicated to the service of the nation. Through rigorous training and fostering a spirit of unity, the RSS continues to shape individuals who are committed to the ideals of social harmony and national development. JAI SHRI RAM

---
“WE AND THE WORLD AROUND”, BOOK BY DR. MANMOHAN VAIDYA:
BOOK REVIEW – SATYAJIT SHRIRAM JOSHI

Dr. Manmohan Vaidya’s book – “We and the World Around” will be released at the most appropriate time. It has come when the world is experiencing conflict between terrorists, led by Hamas and Israel. Hamas- Israel conflict broke out when the war between Russia and Ukraine was still in progress. Capitalism, communism, and religion are mainly involved in two conflicts, proving their inbuilt inadequacy and shallowness as ideologies.
Dr. Vaidya’s book comes as a big hope against this backdrop as it emphasizes the significance and importance of `Bharatiya Vichar Darshan’, which teaches the mantra of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam” and upholds values of democracy, tolerance, acceptance, adoption, and liberty for centuries. Bharatiya Darshan is preaching and practicing all these values when the rest of the world is living with primitive ideas.

“We and the World Around” is important on two counts. Firstly, it presents Bharatiya ideology in a much-needed perspective. Secondly, it gives insight into the ideology and functioning of RSS, which will be celebrating its centenary in 2025. RSS work is growing every day. Its acceptance is rising not only in the country but at the international level. Many people have curiosity and want to know more about RSS at a global level. This book will be helpful to satisfy all their questions.
The author’s deep conviction of his ideology is manifested in every word. He has not hesitated to say that he had deliberately used terms like Bharat and Bharatiya instead of India or Indian. The author, in the preface, explained how the United States is facing a challenge of national identity. He observes that the sentiment of WE and THEY prevail in the US in the absence of national identity and the dominance of multiculturalism. Dr. Vaidya extends his logic by saying that the identity of Bharat is determined by Western institutions and ideology when the responsibility to determine identity – ‘SELF’ – lies with ourselves.
Bharat’s identity is determined by external forces. Dr. Vaidya underlines that Bharat, like other Western countries, is not merely a political community, having a social contract, but a spiritually based geo-cultural identity. Bharat stands for continuous search for truth as it has an attitude of welcoming, accepting, and enriching its own thoughts.
The preface is self-explanatory, which gives an ideological canvas and provides perception to the readers. The book briefs about the ideological foundation of RSS, its 98-year-old journey, and its style of functioning. However, Dr. Vaidya also pooh-poohed communist and leftist thoughts, which are transplanted or outsourced in Bharat. Despite several hardships and difficulties, RSS continues to grow because of its ideological strength and organizational base. Dr. Vaidya explains RSS’s dynamic journey saying that the organization has passed through three phases and is passing through the fourth phase currently. In the fourth phase, RSS expects its volunteers to mold themselves and be instrumental in social awakening and change.
Dr. Manmohan Vaidya is the joint-general secretary of Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS). He has been associated with RSS since his childhood – for decades – and has carried out various responsibilities in the organization. His enriched experience as an activist and thinker is reflected in the book, which is published by Vani Prakashan, New Delhi.
Critics describe RSS as an undemocratic organization. Dr. Vaidya shares his first-person account and maintains how democracy is followed in the RSS. He, in fact, recalls how senior RSS leaders always encouraged him to express his views freely.
Dr. Vaidya takes a dig at communists saying that RSS does not need ‘glasnost’ as Bharatiya Darshan always respects all the views, unlike Semitic society, where only one version is entertained. In Semitic society, a decision is taken by a handful of people while others submit themselves. As against this, consensus is the most outstanding feature of Bharatiya ideology. The author reminds the reader how Bruno was burnt alive in Rome and Galileo was tortured due to the views, that were not acceptable to Christianity.
RSS is not a rigid organization, as seen by its critics. In fact, openness and constant change have been the most outstanding features of RSS. Dr. Vaidya shares an interesting incident to prove his point. He recalls how necessary changes were made in the prayer of Hindu Swayamsewak Sangh (HSS) when some errors were pointed out. This is significant as prayer is considered as the utmost sacred by RSS volunteers.
Two articles on the visit of former President Pranab Mukherjee to the Nagpur training camp are interesting as it exposes the double standards of communists/leftists and Congress. Mukherjee was under pressure from his own party to avoid Nagpur’s visit while he was targeted by leftists. But Pranab Da did not succumb to any pressure and went ahead with his decision. Dr. Vaidya, rightly, attributes this to the pure democratic mindset of RSS and Pranab Da as both of them have deep faith in the Bharatiya concept of democracy, which always respects others’ views. Two chapters are interesting to read as the author was witness to all the developments.
Dr. Vaidya has elaborately discussed certain fundamental concepts like Sanatan, the difference between national and nationalistic, and why Bharat has always been ‘nityanutan’. Dr. Vaidya says that ‘Sanatan’ is an adjective to Rashtra. Sanatan has no beginning and end as it is purely based on spirituality. He rightly points out that Bharat survived despite several invasions for centuries as it never depended upon state or political power. Bharat has its own spiritually based arrangement because of which it survived all the aggressions. To substantiate his point, Dr. Vaidya says that a number of ‘smrities’ were written from time to time and the constitution was the latest ‘smriti’.
The author seeks to differentiate between national and nationalistic saying that the term nationalistic was a by-product of Western idea of the nation-state. He argues that nationalistic countries have their roots in the capitalist ideological past, which imposed world wars on humanity. As against this, Bharatiya ideas subscribe to a holistic integrated approach despite having different identities. The adoption of this idea is a manifestation of the nation.
The book has another interesting chapter on the renovation of the Somnath temple. Congress was divided on the issue as Jawaharlal Nehru opposed the move saying that it would be Hindu revivalism. But another group of Sardar Patel, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the then president of India, and KM Munshi went ahead despite opposition from Nehru. Readers would be shocked to know how Nehru, who is always described as the `icon of democracy’, censored the speech of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. But for Munshi, the renovation of Somnath temple was the restoration of collective subconsciousness.
Dr Vaidya has extensively written on Article 370 and 35 (A). RSS was dead against Article 370 from the beginning. It passed a categorical resolution in 1953. He emphasized that Article 370 was a temporary provision, which was made in view of the situation prevailing at that time. He points out that Article 35 (A) came into existence because of a Presidential Order and never got Parliament approval. He goes on to say how Article 370 was discriminatory against women and SC/ ST communities. It even made people second-class citizens; he argues. The author does not hesitate to blame Jawaharlal Nehru and Sheikh Abdullah for depriving the people of Kashmir of all the development for seven decades.
The article titled `Dead on the left’ is interesting to read. It exposes the hypocrisy of leftists/communists. Being the senior leader of RSS, Dr. Vaidya experienced several incidents, showing the limitations of communism and the gap between `talk and walk’ of communist leaders. He states that West Bengal and Kerala are examples of intolerant and undemocratic attitudes of communists. He shares two separate incidents at Jaipur Literature Festivals when organizers were not keen on inviting RSS leaders. Communist leader Sitaram Yechuri even announced to boycott of the event. He shares another incident, involving Vivek Agnihotri was manhandled at the venue for expressing ‘non-communist thoughts’. Poet Prasun Joshi, who wrote patriotic songs, was also opposed by the organizers. Article shows how communists/leftists project themselves as torchbearers of democracy, freedom of expression and equality but are always afraid of different views.
Dr. Vaidya also explains the concept of Akhand Bharat, which according to him, is a geo-cultural idea. Akhand Bharat is not a geo-political expansionism but aims at restoration of Bharatiya ideas. Explaining his point, Dr. Vaidya points out that Bharat, unlike Western countries, never enslaved the local population, even though it had worldwide trade relations. Bharatiya ideas spread without sending a single soldier or envoy, which is self-explanatory.
The book has two separate articles on RSS founder Dr. Hedgewar and veteran pracharak Dattopant Thengadi. It gives readers information on Dr. Hedgewar’s association with the freedom movement and the efforts he had taken to lay a strong foundation to RSS. Gratitude for Dattopant Thengdi is also seen in a separate article. Dattopant was not merely known for his organizational skills but also as a thinker. The book recognizes efforts taken by Dattopant to expand patriotic thoughts in communist-dominated fields of trade unions and student movement.
The book needs to be welcomed as it is the most appropriate time when people of this country are awakening from their suppressed and denied identity. RSS has been a serious victim of intellectual misleading and misinformation campaigns, led by communists and leftists. While popular support for communists is rapidly shrinking, it continues to dominate intellectual and academic circles. Aware of this reality, communists have become more hyper and may go to any extent, to ignore national interests.
Dr. Vaidya has not merely shown hypocrisy and ideological limitations of communism or western ideologies but also has focused on the strength and potential of Bharatiya Vichar Darshan to lead the world, which is looking for peace due to the failure of all the models. https://vskbharat.com/book-review-we-and-the-world-around-book-by-dr-manmohan-vaidya/?lang=en
