A LIFE OF VALOUR AND SACRIFICE: ON HIS 400TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY WE RETRACE GURU TEGH BAHADUR’S DHARMIC PATH

Dattatreya Hosabale

In Indian history, Guru Shri Tegh Bahadur’s personality shines resplendent like a bright constellation. He was born in Amritsar to Guru Hargobindji and Nankiji on Krishna Panchami in the Baisakhi month. As per Nanakshahi calendar, today is Guru Tegh Bahadur’s 400th birth anniversary.

Guru Tegh Bahadurji was born into a tradition that challenged Mughals of Central Asia that had occupied vast tracts of Indian territory. He is a symbol of tenacity, sacrifice and his life is a wonderful example of physical and mental valour. In fact, Shri Tegh Bahadur’s life stands out as one of the greatest experiments in character-building. By reining in one’s negative instincts, even ordinary men can follow the path of dharma. Those who are trapped in the chakravyuha of blasphemy, avarice and pride cannot remain stable in crisis.
Whilst the behaviour of ordinary men changes in the midst of joy and sorrow, men of great attainment rise above these considerations. Guruji proclaimed that one should be beyond “praise and slander, look upon gold and iron alike” and not be “touched by pleasure or pain, greed, emotional attachment and egotistic pride”.
In his teachings, Guruji exhorted, “One should neither frighten away anyone nor be scared of anyone.” The greatest fear is the fear of death, that goads a person to renounce his values and turn a coward. Guruji said, “I cannot forget the fear of dying, and this worry has torched my body.” Through his preachings and selfless work, Guruji sought to create a society in which one could walk the path of dharma, free from worry and fear. Guruji’s life is perhaps the finest example of attaining the four purusharthas (goals of human existence) – dharma (righteousness), artha (wealth), kama (desire), and moksha (liberation).
He successfully demonstrated excellent human values in his family and the society whilst accomplishing the goals of artha and kama in his domestic life. He attained martyrdom for the cause of dharma. He envisions hope and trust even in the worst of crises. Guruji famously said, “I have regained my power, my bonds are broken and all options are open on to me.” Guru Tegh Bahadurji’s thoughts and actions had such an inspiring impact that they broke the bonds shackling the country and unlocked the path of liberation. His messages in the Braj language are a unique exposition of Bharatiya culture, philosophy and spirituality.
Guruji’s abode, Anandpur Sahib, emerged as a centre of mass struggle against the injustice and atrocities of the Mughals. Aurangzeb wanted to make Hindustan Darul-Islam. Kashmir, an intellectual and spiritual centre, was his key target. The people of Kashmir approached Guruji for guidance, following which he held a lengthy discussion. Situation everywhere was grave. How could the cruel Mughal ambitions be frustrated was the question.
There was only one route – a great man would have to martyr himself to protect his nation and the faiths of her people. Through this sacrifice, a tide of public consciousness would galvanise the nation and shake the walls of the foreign Mughal empire. Who would make this sacrifice? This quandary was resolved by Guruji’s son, Shri Govind Rai, who asked his father if there was anyone who commanded more respect and stature than him.
Aurangzeb’s army imprisoned Guruji along with his three disciples and brought them to Delhi, where they were subjected to inhuman torture and pressurised to convert to Islam. All kinds of alluring assurances were made. But, Guruji stood firm on the path of dharma. Angered by his defiance, the Mughals forced Guruji to watch as his disciples were tortured in Chandni Chowk – Bhai Mati Das was ripped with a saw, Bhai Diyala was drenched in boiling oil and Bhai Sati Das was tied and burnt in a heap of cotton. The Mughal regime probably felt that he would be frightened by the treatment meted out to his disciples.
Guruji knew that the very essence of dharma was to fight injustice and tyranny. As Guruji did not waver, the qazi ordered the executioner to behead him. This act of martyrdom led to a reawakening across the nation. On the martyrdom of his father, tenth guru Shri Govind Singh said, “He protected the tilak (mark on the forehead) and janevu (sacred thread). His martyrdom is a significant event of the Kali Yuga. For the sake of saints, he laid down his head without even a sigh.”
On a day when the whole country is celebrating Guruji’s 400th birth anniversary, let us be reminded that the best way to honour his memory is to follow his path. Today, there is a scramble for enjoying material pleasures. Guruji, however, showed the path of renunciation and restraint. Envy, malice, selfishness and discrimination are prevalent all around. But, the revered Guruji spoke about creativity, harmony and conquering disorders of the mind.
One of the lasting effects of his teachings was on the people he passed en route to Delhi, who refrain from cultivating tobacco till date. Fundamentalist forces are rising to gain dominance. But, Guruji showed the path of valour, selflessness and sacrifice. At a time when mankind is entering a new phase of change, the sacred memory of Guruji propels us to follow his path and build a new India that is rooted in its soil.

1. FESTIVALS: AKSHAYA TRITIYA: Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akti or Akha Teej, is one of the most auspicious festivals for Hindus and Jains. Akshaya Tritiya falls on the Vaishakh Shukla Tritiya (May 14 this year ).

On this day Sri Krishna gave the Akshaya Patra to Draupadi when the Pandavas started for the Vanavasa so that they always have food. 2. STATEMENT BY RSS SARKARYAVAH DATTATREYA JI:

While mentioning the gravity and reach of the corona virus and that is affecting large number of people and families, he expressed condolences on behalf of RSS to all those who have been affected by this calamity. He also gave some useful insights and cautions that all countrymen need to keep in mind as reproduces briefly below.

Although the situation is critical, yet the strength of the society is also enormous. Our capability to meet the most trying crisis is well known across the world. It is our firm belief that we shall certainly overcome the situation by maintaining patience and keeping the morale up along with self-restraint, discipline and mutual support.
Due to sudden worsening of the pandemic, the people are facing the shortage of beds, oxygen and necessary medicines in the hospitals. In a large society like Bharat, the problems often gain gigantic proportions. Extensive efforts are being made to meet these challenges by the union and state governments and also local civic bodies. Putting their lives at stake, everyone in the medical field, security personnel and sanitation workers are discharging their responsibilities as they were doing before. The swayamsevaks of the RSS, as always, are also actively carrying on various types of services across the country to fulfill the needs of the society. The general society, including many social and religious institutions, recognizing the seriousness of the challenge have voluntarily involved themselves in all kinds efforts to bring succour.
It is also possible that destructive and anti Bharat forces in the society can take advantage of these adverse circumstances to create an atmosphere of negativity and mistrust in the country. The countrymen, apart from their positive efforts to resolve the situation, should also be cautious of the conspiracies of these destructive forces.
The RSS exhorts swayamsevaks and humbly appeals to social, religious and service institutions and organizations, and also people from the field of commerce and industry to come forward with a spirit of urgency and service to resolve the current challenges and leave no stone unturned in meeting any kind of shortages. 18. DHARMA: GITA PRESS RUNS INTO ITS NEXT CENTURY:
The most ubiquitous books found in Hindu households throughout Bharat are the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita and Ramcharitmanas, often side by side with the booklet Hanuman Chalisa. A majority of these come from Gita Press in Gorakhpur. Why is that? Their nominal price is a key reason, but it's also because of their impeccable content, easy-to-grasp language, nicely laid-out text and top-quality printing. In two years, on April 29, 2023, Gita Press --Hinduism's largest printer, publisher and distributor of religious literature--will turn 100. But the company continues to plod on unassumingly, without making noise about its huge body of work and incredible achievements.

By March 2019, Gita Press had produced 141.3 million copies of Bhagavad Gita in various editions, 108.7 million copies of the Ramcharitmanas plus other works by Goswami Tulsidas; 25.2 million copies of the Puranas and Upanishads , five million copies of Hanuman Chalisa, 198.6 million copies of small books, especially for children and the less educated; and 160 million copies of scripture-based booklets, pamphlets and texts on topics related to spiritual growth. "Since its inception, Gita Press has published over 700 million books," states Dr. Lal Mani Tiwari, the production manager. Gita Press was founded on April 29, 1923 to propagate and protect Sanatana Dharma. It was a time when religious conversions were peaking and Bharat was in the grip of the British regime. Jaya Dayal Goyandka, Ghanshyam Das Jalan and Hanuman Prasad Poddar joined hands to establish the press for spiritual reawakening and moral righteousness. Readers of the publications unanimously believe no other institution in the world has done such yeoman service to promote Hindu philosophy and culture. 19. BHARAT'S FOUR SUCCESSFUL DECADES AT ANTARCTICA:
The 40th Scientific Expedition to Antarctica (40-ISEA) has successfully returned to Cape Town on 10th April after completing a journey of 12 thousand nautical miles in 94 days, including stopovers. The achievement concludes four successful decades of Bharat's scientific endeavour in the continent of peace and cooperation.
The 40-ISEA comprised Bharatiya scientists, engineers, doctors, and technicians, who began their journey from the Mormugao Port of Goa to Antarctica on 7th January and reached its destination station Bharati on 27th February and Maitri on 8th March. Bharati and Maitri are Bharat's permanent research base stations in Antarctica.

On its way to Antarctica, the voyage team deployed four autonomous Ocean Observing DWS (Directional Wave Spectra) wave drifters between 35-degree and 50-degree south latitudes in collaboration with Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) Hyderabad. The drifters would transmit real-time data of spectral characteristics of waves, sea surface temperatures, and sea-level atmospheric pressure to INCOIS, Hyderabad, which will help validate weather predictions in a big way.
The 40-ISEA was conducted under innumerable challenges due to the persisting Corona virus pandemic. Necessary measures were taken to keep the Antarctic free of corona virus. The team was subjected to a stringent medical examination by the Goa Medical College before departure and was quarantined for 14 days before boarding the ship. After accomplishing several scientific objectives, changeover of winter crew, and Bharati and Maitri's resupply, the 40-ISEA Bharatiya contingent returned to Cape Town on Apr 10, 2021, marking four decades of success of the country's scientific endeavour in Antarctica. -GoTop

JAI SHRI RAM

RAM RAJYA: A MORAL SOVEREIGNTY
Ram Madhav

“Hinduism is a movement, not a position; a process, not a result; a growing tradition, not a fixed revelation”, wrote eminent scholar-politician-statesman DrSarvapalliRadhakrishnan in his seminal work The Hindu View of Life. He went on to say, “Precious as are the echoes of God’s voice in the souls of men of long ago, our regard for them must be tempered by the recognition of the truth that God has never finished the revelation of His wisdom and love. Besides, our interpretation of religious experience must be in conformity with the findings of science. As knowledge grows, our theology develops. Only those parts of the tradition which are logically coherent are to be accepted as superior to the evidence of the senses and not the whole tradition.”

Unlike the Semitic religions, Hinduism is not a religion of ‘believers’. “Unless you believe, you will not understand”, St Augustin of Hippo had exhorted early Christians of the Roman empire. But Hinduism allowed inquiry and wanted men to be seekers, rather than mere believers. Ram and the Ramayana are divine for many. Gandhi called Ram his personal deity. But Ambedkar did not agree much with Ram. He even challenged the Ramayana, going to the original by Valmiki, in his Riddles in Hinduism. However, there is a common aspect in Gandhi and Ambedkar’s stances: both argued from a logical perspective, not from blind faith or blind hatred.
Whether Ram was a historical person or not did not bother Gandhi much. What mattered to him was the concept of ‘Ram Rajya’. In his view, Ram Rajya essentially meant equal rights to “prince and pauper”. Even during his two visits to Ayodhya, the abode of his deity Ram, in 1921 and 1929, Gandhi’s rhetoric was about standing up for the weak and the meek. Addressing the saints of Ayodhya on the banks of the river Saryu during his visit in February 1921, he resorted to his favourite subject of Ram Rajya. He chose cow protection as the point of reference to tell saints, “Praying to God for our own protection is a sin as long as we do not protect the weak…We need to learn to love the way Ram loved Sita”. There is no way to achieve Ram Rajya or swaraj without observing this svadharma, he told them.
Meanwhile, Ambedkar’s criticism of the Ramayana was based on his perception of certain events. He believed, not necessarily correctly, that Ram upheld the Varnashrama system and had killed a Dalit saint called Shambuka. “Some people seem to blame Ram because he…without reason killed Shambuka. But to blame Ram for killing Shambuka is to misunderstand the whole situation. Ram Raj was…based on Chaturvarnya. As a king, Ram was bound to maintain Chaturvarnya. It was his duty therefore to kill Shambuka, the Shudra, who had transgressed his class and wanted to be a Brahmin. This is the reason why Rama killed Shambuka”, Ambedkar writes. Many scholars insist that the story of Shambuka’s killing was an interpolation. Ambedkar was also critical, probably on more valid grounds, of Ram’s treatment of Sita. He saw Ram Rajya as unjust and patriarchal and commented on Ram’s dismissal of Sita to forests the second time as “there are not wanting Hindus who use this as grounds to prove that Ram was a democratic king when others could equally well say that he was a weak and cowardly monarch.”
