1. FESTIVALS: PITRU PAKSHA: Pitru paksha is a 16-day ritual (September 29 – October 14) performed by the Hindus to remember the contribution of their ancestors to their lives. This 15-day ritual is observed before Navratri and it is believed that performing puja and praying for the departed souls on these days helps in seeking their blessings.

As per the Hindu tradition, praying and performing the rituals during Pitru Paksha hold utmost importance as the offerings are believed to reach the ancestors in Pitru Lok. Pitru Paksha emphasises the fact that the ancestors, the current generation and their next unborn generation are connected.  -GoTop

2. RSS SARSANGHCHALAK’S PROGRAMS:  While addressing a gathering at the inauguration ceremony of the new office of Narkesari Prakashan Limited on September 1, RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr. Mohan Bhagwat said that Bharat is a ‘Hindu Rashtra’ and added that a large section of the population has accepted this fact. He described Bharat as a civilizational state, underscoring the profound influence of Hinduism as the nation’s eternal culture. He maintained that while Bharat warmly welcomes all religions, Hinduism serves as the very bedrock of the country. Addressing the media’s role, Dr. Bhagwat urged the fourth estate to actively participate in nation-building and contribute to elevating Bharat to the status of a global powerhouse. He underscored the necessity for media to raise social consciousness and foster positivity in the thoughts of citizens, while striving to eliminate negativity.
Speaking at a Jain Samaj function at Bhagwan Mahavir Dharamshala in Guwahati, Dr. Bhagwat said that special names do not change with language and we should use Bharat even when talking to people from foreign countries. He added that we take along everyone because we consider the whole world as one and that is our culture and spirituality. This is our knowledge and today the entire world needs this knowledge.
On September 10, Dr. Bhagwat addressed a congregation organised by the Namdhari mission in memory of Satguru Partap Singh and Mata Bhupinder Kaur at Namdhari International headquarters Bhaini Sahib, Ludhiana and said that Bharat’s job is to create balance in the world and it is playing its role very well. Bharat is not a selfish country and believes in taking everyone along with it, Satguru Uday Singh of Namdhari community was present on the occasion.
While addressing a gathering of senior citizens in Nagpur on September 5, Dr, Bhagwat said that the roots of our culture are based on truth and efforts are being made to uproot this culture. Further, he said that the family system is collapsing across the world but Bharat has survived this crisis as truth is its foundation. He also termed the increasing tendency for fulfilment of worldly pleasures and the attempt by some to justify it through their philosophy as ‘Cultural Marxism’.
Replying to a question by a student at an event in Nagpur, Dr. Bhagwat told him that if he goes on working for it, he would see it materialise before he get old. He added that to become Bharat they need not erase the lines on the map, but accept the swabhav of Bharat.

3. VASUDHAIV KUTUMBAKAM - G20 MEET: The 18th edition of G20 Summit in New Delhi has come to an end. It made history for a variety of reasons: From showcasing Bharat's graceful culture to hospitality to inclusiveness in organising the mammothly significant global event. As the baton passes over to Brazil, Bharat’s one-year presidency formally comes to an end but not before it has played a pivotal role in bringing all countries together for building a just, harmonious and equitable world order. Though G20 meetings have always been a platform for global leaders to address pressing issues, this time Bharatiya Pradhan Mantri Narendra Modi made it more inclusive, almost a people’s movement. The most important achievement of this G20 conclave, which it would be best remembered for, is Delhi Declaration. Delhi Declaration resulted in several significant outcomes. It was not easy though as both Russia and China remained adamant on a number of issues. After much persuasion and brainstorming, in a huge success for Bharat’s presidency, the G20 members agreed by consensus to a joint statement for accepting the contentious “Ukraine paragraphs”. The final document marks a shift in the position taken by the US, the European Union and G7 countries, and dilutes the criticism of Russia.
This edition of the Summit broke new ground by welcoming Africa into the fold and practically making the grouping "G21". This historic move underscored the crucial role played by New Delhi in fostering inclusiveness. The decision to expand the G20 into G21 with the inclusion of the African Union marked a pivotal moment in the history of global governance. It was a testament to the commitment of participating nations to address the challenges of our interconnected world collectively. While the G20 has been an influential platform, it was long overdue for more substantial representation from the neglected African continent. The importance of Africa's position is undeniable: It has a burgeoning population, vast natural resources and immense potential for economic growth. Bringing Africa into the G21 is a recognition of the continent's significance and an acknowledgment that these countries' challenges require global attention and collaborative solutions. It indeed goes to the credit of Prime Minister Modi to bring it to fruition. The two-day summit would also also remembered for the absence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the reservation of their countries to the mention of Ukraine and “Vasudhaiva kutumbakam." Their absence notwithstanding, the New Delhi G20 Summit has achieved its purpose in building consensus over a variety of issues. The G21 adopted inclusive agenda that recognised the unique challenges faced by both emerging economies and developing nations, offering tailored solutions for a more equitable world. The G21 placed a particular emphasis on addressing African development issues. Though they say "never the twain shall meet", Bharat has been instrumental in successfully bringing together the North and South Poles! (11 September 2023, The Pioneer Editorial)

JAI SHRI RAM
---
RESURGENCE OF SANATAN BHARAT IS POSSIBLE
SUDHANSHU DAS

Philosophers, thinkers, patriotic leaders, astrologers, saints, and seers have predicted that Bharat would return to Amrit Kaal. A period where the entire world will witness the resurgence of the Sanatan Bharat, which will save the world from dark and demonic greed. The Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS) of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has resolved to build the nation on Bharatiya knowledge and Bharatiya philosophy by strengthening the family institution, creating a fraternity-based harmonious society, and developing entrepreneurship with Swadeshi spirit. When the dawn breaks, the entire Sangh Parivar sing in praise of the Motherland, “Namaste Sadavastale Matrubhumi…”.

Patriotism has immense potential to bring the much talked about blissful time. It will cement the religious, caste, and language divides in the country; patriotism is a powerful weapon against corruption, graft, and mismanagement. A person imbibed with patriotism can achieve phenomenal success and perform great deeds for the country. In view of the growing menace of religious fanatics, caste and parochial leaders, it is essential to plant patriotism in the minds of the youth. Patriotism mixed with physical and intellectual capacity always has a magical effect on the country’s economic, social, cultural and religious development. A fraternity-based harmonious society, as visualised by the Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha, is possible through patriotism.
Today, parochialism hurts the domestic market. Uneducated people in the unorganised sector lose their profit margin as they fail to communicate in their mother tongue, Hindi and easily fall into the trap of middlemen and traders. Language fanatics in some states do not allow people to learn the national language, Hindi and indirectly bring ruin to the economy of the small traders, artisans and farmers. One common language is necessary for interaction among people; it will boost domestic trade, tourism, pilgrim tourism, and hospitality sectors. The mother tongue, Hindi, will not obliterate the regional languages; rather, it will strengthen those languages; People from different states will exchange ideas, skills and knowledge for mutual growth. A simpler version of Sanskrit should be popularised along with Hindi in a mission mode across the country; it will quicken the process of national integration. The Uttarakhand Government has taken a historic decision to develop one Sanskrit-speaking village in each of the 13 districts in the State, and Sanskrit is the second official language in Uttarakhand.
The study of the Sanskrit language will give clues to many scientific innovations. In the past, cartloads of
Sanskrit scriptures and manuscripts were transported to Asia and Europe, which later inspired many scientific discoveries and religions in different countries. Today, more than 25 universities in Germany teach Sanskrit, and Germany has produced the largest number of Sanskrit scholars in the last five decades. Sanskrit has tremendous potential to integrate Bharat, and learning this language has a positive influence on human behaviour and culture. Learning Sanskrit does not mean one will not study English, which is also essential now for exchanging technology, advanced skills and knowledge. Intense and relentless research on Sanskrit scriptures and manuscripts may give Bharat clues to develop advanced weapon systems, medicines, economy and social life. Dr Vijay Bedekar of Thane in Mumbai is a Gynecologist, and he has dedicated his life to preserving and researching the ancient manuscripts he painstakingly collected from the remote villages of Maharashtra. He has established an Institute of Oriental Studies on his own premises for preservation and research of rare manuscripts. The writer met Dr Vijay Bedekar in 1990 and published his interview in the Indian Express in his pen name “Siddharth.” A few people like Vijay Bedekar show relentless commitment to protecting Bharat’s cultural heritage. People who do not know the importance of Sanskrit behave like a blind man touching the tail of an elephant and imagining it as a rope. The language Sanskrit will instill Amrit in the life of people.
The foundation of the Amrit Kaal is based on the youth’s intellectual and physical strength. In the field of innovation, Bharat rose from 81 ranks in 2015 to 46 in 2021 in the Global Innovation Index (GII). AI, cloud, mobility, green tech, health tech, etc., have steadily progressing in the last five years. The National Education Policy 2020 has advocated that “wherever possible, the medium of instruction until at least Grade 5, but preferably till Grade 8 and beyond, will be in the mother tongue-regional language” for public and private schools. Studying in the mother tongue helps children understand the concepts clearly, and does not clog their minds when they grow up. It also helps them master English and Maths, which are very important in life. Until 1984, most students who qualified for the civil services and in the nationalised banks’ officers’ grade exams studied in regional languages. Mother tongue has a magical effect on a person’s capacity to understand and grow, though it can’t give the child an anglicised accent.
Bharat, for centuries has been attacked, humiliated and subjugated by external forces; its economy, culture and civilisation were always under attack. Despite continuous effort to erase this ancient civilisation, Bharatiya culture and civilisation has survived due to its core strength, which is not material but spiritual. The Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS) of RSS’ resolve to build the nation on Bharatiya knowledge and Bharatiya philosophy is the need of the hour. Efforts are on to produce Sanskrit scholars who can read and explain the scriptures to people in the common man’s language. Though the foreign rules had destroyed much of our knowledge source and dented our confidence level, the Bharatiya knowledge and Bharatiya philosophy are very much enshrined in every Bharatiya family.
In order to preserve this precious knowledge and philosophy the government’s look-within approach will yield results. Bharat is a treasure trove of microeconomic activities which are Swadeshi in nature. Only the Bharatiya handicraft sector can amass huge wealth for the country if its original grace and artistry is preserved. Bharat’s countless artisans, with their imagination and creativity, add incredibly high value to ordinary organic material; they inherit the priceless skills from their forefathers and pass them on to the younger generations. There are innumerable indigenous environment-friendly techniques that were used to keep the house cool and warm; there was technique to lift water to the hilltop and send messages with sound. The Ram Setu is an architectural marvel as the materials used to make the Setu are well explained in the scriptures. With talents, knowledge, skills, imagination and creativity, each Bharatiya can foresee the shape of things to come-the Amrit Kaal. https://organiser.org/2023/08/31/193080/bharat/resurgence-of-sanatan-bharat-is-possible/

1. FESTIVALS: GANESH CHATURTHI (September 19 this year) is replete with divinity, celebrations, and vibrancy. This 10-day long festival not only celebrates the birthday of Bhagwan Ganesh, but is also a social and community event that brings people together and promotes harmony. The popular belief is that Bhagwan Ganesh visits earth during these 10 days to bless his devotees. Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856–1920), a noted leader of the Bharatiya Independence Movement, was instrumental in converting Bhagwan Ganesh into a powerful cultural and religious symbol of unity in an attempt to resist the British rule. In 1893, Tilak reinvented the Ganesh Chaturthi, converting it from an annual family celebration to a public event.

The preparation for the festival begins months earlier with artisans crafting images of Ganesh in different sizes. These idols are installed in specially decorated pandals or at homes. On the last day of the festival, Anant Chaturdashi, the statues are paraded through the streets amidst singing and dancing, and immersed in the ocean or other water bodies. The immersion of the statues reinforces the belief that the universe is in a constant state of change, and eventually gives away to formlessness. The act of immersion denotes the circle of life.  -GoTop

JAI SHRI RAM
---
RECAPTURING THE SENSE OF NATIONAL IDENTITY, FINALLY

J Nandakumar

We stepped into Amritkaal with a strong footing – with a firm resolve to shed the vestiges of the slavish mentality that was instilled in us by colonisers. The clarion call for undertaking this course correction was given by Pujaneeya Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat, who, in his Vijayadashmi speech, emphasised the need to reorient our polity and national life on the basis of our svatva – national selfhood. On August 15, 2022, Pradhan Mantri Narendra Modi laid out a clear plan of action to erase the traces of colonial mentality through the Panchpran (The Five Promises).“In the next 25 years, we have to focus on ‘Panchpran.’ First, we will move forward with bigger resolves and resolve of developed India. Second, we will erase all the traces of servitude from within and from around us. Third, we will be proud of our legacy. Fourth, we will work on the strength of unity, and fifth, to fulfil our duties to the citizens of India, including the PM and the CMs.” After we gained Independence from the British, there was an opportunity for us to make a departure from the path the colonial masters had laid out for us. But the Eurocentric native rulers did not even move a finger, but rather tried to trample on all expressions of our national selfhood. Confusions were sought to be created on our national identity by Left intellectuals. As a result of 75 years of indoctrination through media and academia, we produced legions of listless men and women who hated their culture and country.

Defining the American creed, US political thinker Samuel Huntington states: “The American Creed is the unique creation of a dissenting Protestant culture”. He further states: “Protestant emphasis on the individual conscience and the responsibility of individuals to learn God’s truths directly from the Bible promoted American commitment to individualism, equality, and the rights to freedom of religion and opinion. Protestantism stressed the work ethic and the responsibility of the individual for his own success or failure in life… With its congregational forms of church organization, Protestantism fostered opposition to hierarchy and the assumption that similar democratic forms should be employed in government.”
Huntington clearly dismisses the argument that America is a “land of settlers” and therefore doesn’t have a national identity. According to him, the American identity has been shaped by Protestantism.
FORCES AND THEIR TOOLS
In no other country has there been confusion about its national identity as pronounced as in Bharat. Before the advent of Europeans, there wasn’t any confusion. There existed a cultural, spiritual and at times political unity.
Inhabitants of this land shared a clear conception about the sacred geographical contours of the nation, notwithstanding existence of numerous kingdoms and principalities. A strong power center was not the force that sustained this unity. Political differences never came in the way of the evolution of a national character that is distinctly Bharatiya. There was something living and dynamic about this heritage which showed itself in its world view and approach to humanity, nature and life’s problems.
Much before the incursions of Muslim invaders, Bharat had weathered several challenges posed by external forces. Characterised by its unique philosophical outlook, the nation not only measured up to the challenge posed by external forces but also showed an urge to synthesis and reform. In this exercise, many of them got assimilated into the cultural mainstream.
British manipulated and appropriated Hindu scriptures. During the Mughal period, too, there were huge manipulations done to confuse the population about Hindu Dharma. Sufis led the movement to convert Hindus to Islam
However, a major challenge to the national life was posed by the Islamic invaders who destroyed not only the cultural and spiritual institutions and centres but indulged in largescale conversion of people. If one looks closely at the centers of knowledge and wealth that they destroyed, the temples they had chosen to demolish, it would be clear that what drove them was not mere wealth. I-have-a-book-so-burn-down-all-libraries was the mindset which led to the destruction of ancient universities and libraries of Bharat.
Resilience of our civilisation helped it survive during those tortuous times. When temples were destroyed, people moved their Gods to their houses. Entire Arabia became completely Islamised in a matter of ten years after the Prophet launched Islam but it could not achieve that same feat in Bharat. Islam erased many civilisations and cultures from the face of earth but its march slowed down in Bharat. But the Sanatanis had to pay a heavy price with their blood. It is often argued that the British manipulated and appropriated Hindu scriptures. During the Mughal period, too, there were huge manipulations done to confuse the population about Hindu Dharma. Sufis led the movement to convert Hindus to Islam.
But the more sinister and scheming were the British, who employed methods to wean us away from our Svatva and Swadharma. All tools at their disposal were used to achieve this. Education, administration, history, religion, statecraft and even archaeology was used to destroy our sense of selfhood. There was an attempt to recast our value systems through a Euro-centric yardstick. As Gandhiji lamented, the “beautiful tree” of Bharatiya Education system was destroyed with an intention to create an army of slavish people to work as clerks for the British.
ARCHAEOLOGY AS A STRATEGY
Archaeology was harnessed to push the Aryan Invasion myth. The pioneer in Bharatiya archaeology Alexander Cunningham, an official with East India Company, is on record stating that the purpose of his excavations was to “show that Brahmanism was of comparatively modern origin, and has been constantly receiving additions and alterations; facts which prove that the establishment of the Christian religion in India must ultimately succeed.”
The British and Western ‘Orientalists’ had deep-rooted conviction that Christianity was superior to Hindu Dharma, Buddhism and Jainism.
In the North East they adopted a different strategy. Author Michel Danino states: “Archaeology in those seven states has been sorely neglected and important finds poorly highlighted. Yet, by documenting the presence of Hindu and Buddhist temples and artefacts dating back to a few centuries BCE and CE, they effectively dispel the widespread but untenable notion that this region was never culturally attached to India.” AK Sharma, who led several excavations in North East, stated: “During the pre-independence era, in spite of some archaeological evidences showing similarities with the rest of the country, the myth of backwardness was deliberately inculcated and propagated as this facilitated the missionaries in conversion of the indigenous people to their faith… Though the entire region abounds in archaeological and cultural wealth, very little has been done so far to unearth the glorious past of the area. If proper attention would have been paid earlier, as was done in the case of other parts of the country, the feeling of aloofness and alienation that was deliberately inculcated by the enemies of the country could have been avoided. We are responsible for keeping our brothers and sisters of the Northeast in the dark about their glorious past, about their very close relationships with the rest of the country.”
Forces of history have been conspiring to weaken our svatva consciousness but there have been efforts by our great leaders to reconnect us with our cultural roots. It should be borne in mind that our cultural heritage is not just an arithmetical aggregate of diverse regional cultures. Actually, the regional cultures are the manifestation of Bharatiya culture. Although they are expressed in diverse idioms and characteristic flavours, the soul of these cultures is same. The totality of all these cultures defines our svatva. Dr Radhakrishnan had said about Bharatiya literature that ‘All Indian literature is one, written in different languages.’
Bharat from time immemorial has been regarded as one country from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari. For us, she was our mother – Bharat Mata. This is reflected in the Prithvi Sukta and the more recent Anand Math of Bankim Chandra Chatopadhyay Every region of Bharat has been a part of the sacred whole. Every part of Bharat is bestowed with teerthas and saints and sages and our social, cultural and spiritual life was linked to them in one way or the other. Beneath the superficial differences and variations, a discernable observer can see the same spiritual inspiration at work.
Even in political sphere, the same thought process is at work. There were leaders who had firmly believed that the Soviet model was the panacea for all problems facing Bharat. Some wanted to go for the American model. But great men like Deendayalji tried to bring in a Bharatiya idiom to politics through his integral humanism – Ekatma Manav Darshan. The atmanirbhar campaign propounded by the present government is also an attempt to move towards our svatva – soul of Bharat.
Bharat from time immemorial has been regarded as one country from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari. For us, she was our mother – Bharat Mata. This is reflected in the Prithvi Sukta and the more recent Anand Math of Bankim Chandra Chatopadhyay. For us, Bharat Mata is the ultimate manifestation of our identity. As rightly put by Sri Aurobindo,“It is not a piece of earth, nor a figure of speech, nor a fiction of the mind. The mighty Shakti we call Bhavani Bharati is the living unity of the Shaktis of three hundred million people.” It is this living unity of Bharat symbolized as our common mother that we have been taught to respect through the ages. Departure from this ideal is the root cause of all fissiparous tendencies rising in our country.
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh has been assiduously working to instill among people to strengthen the national consciousness. As pointed out by the Sarsanghchalak, what we need today is intellectual Kshatriyas who are ready to take on forces that are out to destroy our sense of selfhood at various levels.
