6. HINDU NAV VARSH: USHERING NEW YEARWITH CULTURAL FLAVOUR - By Devidas Deshpande: A number of women, young and aged alike appear in the nine-yard saris, their traditional attire. They are bedecked with the jewelleries of all sorts. The "nath", a genuinely Marathi jewellery worn in the nose, is especially conspicuous. A saffron headgear in true Maharashtrian style adorns them all. However, they are not standing with a tray carrying lamps and vermillion in it - as is the picture associated with the women in such clothing. They ride on motorbikes, some on as high-end brands like Harley Davidson and Royal Enfield, in hordes.
Men, again in traditional attire and saffron head gears, numbering in hundreds follow the file of these women. Chants of Jai Shri Ram and saint poetry resonate in the air. This is a scene commonplace in all the major cities in Maharashtra every Gudhi Padwa day. Before the commencement of shobhayatras, the celebration of the New Year meant partying all the night on December 31, consuming alcohol and exchanging the greetings. The younger generation had no other idea than this for the start of a new calendar. With the Gudhi Padwa processions, things have changed a lot. Now they have their own new year that is firmly entrenched in an age-old tradition.
Gudhi Padwa marks the beginning of the New Year for the Hindus and falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. It is known as Yugadi or Ugadi in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The Shakas defeated the Huns on this day and Shalivahan vanquished his enemies. That is why Shalivahan Shak or the new calendar starts from this day. The Gudhi representing Brahma's flag (Brahmadhvaj) is hoisted on every house as a symbolic representation of Rama's victory and happiness on returning to Ayodhya after slaying Ravan. These traditional methods are now accompanied by the processions. While former rituals were meant for a family to follow, the new tradition has unveiled in the societal pathway.
The tradition of the Shobhayatra or the processions taken out on the occasion of Gudhi Padwa has brought a new definition of the celebration of the new year. It has become a cultural icon for Hindus of all hues. These processions, also called as the Nav Varsh Swagat Yatra, have become a hallmark of the Marathi culture.
In fact, Dombivali boasts of the distinction of hosting first such procession way back in year 1999. The procession was taken out on the Gudhi Padwa but seeing its potential of consolidating the Hindus, similar events took place on other significant days like Diwali, Ganeshotsav and Navratri. As the trend started from Dombival, it later spread to adjoining Thane and then other cities of the state. They have turned into social occasion to unite the community - one of the chief aims of organising the Ganeshotsav by Lokmanya Tilak during the British Raj. While the Ganeshotsav, aimed at preparing the common people for an uprising against the oppressive rulers, the objective of the Shobhayatra has been subtle one - to arise and make aware the Hindus of their glorious past and take pride in it.
Many children can be seen enacting historical characters such as Chatrapati Shivaji, Jahnsi Ki Rani and Freedom Fighters. Even someone dressed as Bhagwan Shiva riding a motorbike is not an uncommon sight. Various social organisations and political parties also take part in the event with the social messages like water conservation, environmental awareness, dental care and need for unity in the society. Besides the large number of the participants, who walk with the procession, there is a big number of spectators who witness these processions on the street. Women welcome these near their homes or simply watch from their balconies.
Abasaheb Patwari was the one who initiated the tradition of processions on the Gudhi Padwa. He along with his colleagues from the Ganesh Mandir Sanstha thought of organising such processions.
In its first year, the organisers expected a crowd of 7 to 8 thousand. However, they were pleasantly surprised to see a turnout of about 50 thousand.
Two years ago, in line with the Swach Bharat Abhiyan of the government, the procession in Dombival gave the message of 'Clean Dombivali.. Beautiful Dombivali'. As many as 150 organisations took part in it. Use of plastic cups and plates was prohibited while distribution of leaflets was also forbidden to reduce the garbage. The Gudhi, the mark of the victory of Hindu king Vikramaditya, was erected in every square of the city.
A prominent feature of these processions is the women leading the charge of the procession. Women in their traditional attire participate in large numbers in the procession. Patwari says that when the procession was started in 1999, the middle-aged individuals had a large share in the participants. Nowadays, the young generation is participating overwhelmingly.
Like the Ganeshotsav processions, the shobhayatras have also become a vehicle of the social enlightenment. Every year, the volunteers and participants come up with the theme-based floats.
Topics like 400th birth anniversary of Saint Tukaram, 125th anniversary of Veer Savarkar's world-famous jump at the Marseilles port, cleanliness drive and electricity saving were some of the themes that have been handled till now.
Some years ago, the conservancy staff members of the Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation were in tears when they were felicitated during a procession.
The conservancy staff is not considered a part of the elite and high-brow society. However, they have the key role in keeping the city clean. That is why they were rewarded for their work with a special note on the occasion of one of the biggest festivals of Hindus. (Organiser, April 2, 2017) - goTop

NEED FOR NATIONALIST NARRATIVE IN EDUCATION - PRAJNA PRAVAH: The need for a "real nationalist narrative" focusing on the Bharatiya perspective in higher education was deliberated upon by over 700 academicians, including the vice-chancellors of 51 universities, during a two-day workshop hosted by Prajna Pravah, an RSS-affiliate body at New Delhi.
The lack of "Indianness" in the educational system of the country has been pointed out by various commissions and the Supreme Court too has called for incorporating Indian views into it, said J Nand Kumar, national convener of Prajna Pravah which hosted the event. Delivering the 7th Nanaji Deshmukh memorial lecture in New Delhi on indigenous model of development, Bhagwat said while Bharat never attacks anyone, it is capable of defending itself. Referring to the 'sabka saath, sabka vikas' slogan, he said it is a "religious" slogan, but religion in this case should not be confused with its "modern connotations" which make it a very tricky issue. He said religion is something which prompts a person to do his or her duty. He said Sangh visionary Deen Dayal Upadhyay, and Mahatma Gandhi talked of 'antodaya' or the development of the last person. The RSS chief also stressed on the need to have development and environment on the same page like friends. Senior journalist Rajat Sharma also spoke on the occasion and recalled how Deshmukh had made Jayaprakash Narayan join the students' movement in 1974.

11. PIOS RAISE $100K FOR 'HERO' WHO TOOK BULLET FOR DESIS: The bullet that American hero Ian Grillot took standing up to xenophobic hate against two Bharatiya engineers in Kansas in the month of February was worth more than $100,000 the Bharatiya-American community raised for him. "Whatever you have done to save the life of a stranger, you represent the true America, you are the true hero… money cannot compensate you for your heroism, but I hope you will accept this cheque and utilize it towards buying your house," community leaders, Bharat's ambassador Navtej Sarna and consul general Houston Anupam Ray told Grillot at an event on Saturday, that was attended by his parents.

ABPS 2017 RESOLUTION
Growing Jehadi Activities in West Bengal - a Challenge to National Interests
The Akhil Bharatiya Pratinidhi Sabha (ABPS) expresses grave concern over the unabated rise in violence by Jehadi elements in West Bengal, encouragement to the anti-national elements by the state government due to its Muslim vote bank politics and declining Hindu population in the state. The attack and looting of the Kaliyachak Police Station (District Malda) which is just 8 Km inside the Bangladesh border, burning down of the crime record by the anti-national Jehadi elements and growing incidents of attack on security forcesin the state are posing a serious challenge to national security and law and order. Fatwas inciting violence are openly being issued by fundamentalist Maulavis. Hindus are being attacked by fundamentalist elements at several places including Katwa, Kaligram, Ilambazarand Metiaburuj (Kolkata). Large number of Hindus are being forced to flee from the border areas under the pressure of fundamentalist forces. Smuggling of fake currency and cow progeny along with illegal migration are being perpetually encouraged by these very elements. During the investigation of Burdwan bomb blasts, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has found that several terror modules exist across the state and this network ofJehadi extremists is spread on both sides of the border.
Just when extremists, fomenting trouble in a planned manner, are being encouraged by giving ministerial berths and other prominent political and government positions,at the same time the State Government is creating obstacles in celebrating religious activities of the Hindu society. Sometime back, timings for the immersion of MaaDurga idols were unusually curtailed because of Muharram for which the State Government attracted strictures from the Kolkata High Court.
Several incidents of bomb blasts, arson, violence and molestation of women have been reported in the past few years. The worst sufferers of these atrocities on the Hindu society, have been the members of the Scheduled Castes. 6 persons from these communities were killed at Juranpur, Vaishnavnagar, Kharagpur and Mallarpur and during the last year's Durga Puja, a 17 year old girl student from the same community was attacked with acid bulbs, who later succumbed to the injuries. At Dhulagadh, on 13-14 December 2016, Hindus were subjected to a preplanned attack resulting in horrid incidents of arson, looting and molestation of womenfolk. Instead of controlling the extremist elements, the State Government attempted to completely hide these incidents. It is shocking that cases were foisted against some impartial journalists who courageously brought the above heinous incidents to light. While on one hand the State Government is threatening to close down the schools which are instilling the spirit of patriotism, on the other hand it is turning a blind eye towards thousands of institutions like the notorious Simuliamadarsa where Jehadi and fundamentalist training is being imparted. Original Bangla words in the text books are being distorted under the influence of fundamentalist elements. At several places efforts are being made to stop the traditional Saraswati Puja in the educational institutions. The State Government is overlooking the attempts to islamisethe schools like the pretext of observing Milad-Un-Nabi.
Last year, when the school administration refused the permission to observe Milad-un-Nabi, extremists took control of a 1750 students-strong higher secondary school at Tehatta, just 40 Km away from Kolkata, hoisted their flag and locked the lady teachers in a room. As a consequence, the school remained closed for a month.
At the time of partition, Hindu majority area of Bengal came into existence as West Bengal. Thereafter, due to the continuous persecution and atrocities in East Pakistan, present Bangladesh, large number of Hindus were forced to seek refuge in West Bengal. It is surprising that despite the large influx of Hindus displaced from Bangladesh to West Bengal, Hindu population of the state which constituted 78.45 % in 1951 has declined to 70.54% as per census of 2011. This is a matter of serious concern to the unity and integrity of the country.
The ABPS strongly condemns the extremist violence and the Muslim appeasement policy by the State Government and calls upon the countrymen to create awareness against this Jehadi violence and communal politics of the State Government. It also urges the media to present the prevalent grave situation before the country. The ABPS calls upon the State Government to rise above petty vote bank politics and discharge its constitutional obligations. The ABPS also urges the Union Government to ensure firm action against these anti national Jehadi elements of the state in the interest of national security. - goTop
